Tetrachloroethylene (PCE or PERC) is a colorless, transparent chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent with a slight ether-like odor. It possesses excellent chemical stability, is non-flammable, has strong dissolving power, and a moderate evaporation rate. It can dissolve a variety of oils, resins, waxes, and organic compounds, making it one of the most commonly used industrial solvents in the dry cleaning and metal cleaning industries. Due to its high boiling point, chemical stability, and low likelihood of side reactions, tetrachloroethylene is widely used in chemical synthesis, electronic cleaning, degreasing agents, extractants, and refrigerant production, making it one of the most widely used industrial solvents globally.
